U.S military is constantly renovating its weapons and technology. On Tuesday U.S Army officially selected new rifle and infantry for front lines troops. The guns were developed by small arms manufacture Sig Sauer and have officially designated XM5 Rifle and XM250 Automatic Rifle. The XM5 rifle will replace M16 weapons first adopted in 1967 and still in use today. The XM5 will replace M4A1 Carbine and XM250 Automatic Rifle will replace the M249 Squad Automatic Weapons. These new weapons are optic designed to allow troops to observe and hit targets from greater distances.
Rifle and carbine is basic weapons issued to infantry, Special Forces and other combat support units. Most soldiers in nine person squad will carry a rifle or carbine while automatic rifles are only carried by two squad members and designed to put on a large volume of fire.
M4A1 Carbine is a shortened, improved version of original M16 assault rifles adopted during Vietnam war era. The current weapon is very reliable. The problem as far as the Army is concerned is that rifle still uses the 5.56-millimeter caliber rifle round. Body armor has become standard issues in modern armies and the concern is that older round lacks punch even with armor-piercing upgrades, to ensure that it can penetrate body armor.
