US Army: New SDMR Rifles to Fill the Gap between Rifleman and Sniper

A designated marksman rifle is a modern high precision rifle used by infantrymen in he designated marksman role. It fills the engagement range gap between standard service rifle and a dedicated sniper rifle. It can aim around 300- 600 meters. New York Army National Guard in shot form NYNG soldiers in 27th infantry brigade commander team have trained in US army’s new M110 A1 Squad Designated Marksman Rifle ( SDMR).

 

A total of 30 IBCT soldiers from New York from New York as well from Massachusetts participated in two day new equipment training. The test was successful and event provided an opportunity for the soldiers to learn to operate and maintain the new rifle while getting a new experience in their combat skills.

 

The thirty soldiers spent a day on sniper range at New York’s Fort Drum. It is a reservation and census designated place. Skills learned were put into practice against paper and steel targets.

 

SDMT is developed by Heckler and Koch Defense. The 7.62 mm SDMR rifle is fitted with a Sig Sauer Tango6 optic, as well as special buttstock and suppressor. US Army Tank commanding specialist and new equipment training instructor David Beesley said, “ SDMR was developed to fill the gap between rifleman and sniper.”

 

SDMR rifle can shoot out to 300m effectively. It can fill the target from 300m to 600 m gap so the army won’t have to rely on sniper for those long shots.

 

The US Army noted that the weapon has been fielded in the active-duty army for a few years.It has been deployed with only a few of the US states and territory National Guard commands.
