Reading is a part of humanity and re creation to every people. Researchers have developed switching to a font suitable to reader can increase reading speed while preserving comprehension. Researchers at University of Central Florida have discovered that no one size fits all approach for digital reading. Changing font size can speed up reading while maintaining comprehension.
The readability Consrtoium at UFC conducted the study which revealed that switching to a font was more suitable for a particular reader resulted in a 35% boost in reading speed while maintaining comprehension. It was analyzed people’s reading speed and comprehension levels while reading material in different typefaces. But the readers usually are not aware of their ideal fonts. For the research a diverse group of 352 participants aged 18 to 71 were tasked with reading digital texts. Sixteen common fonts used online in news print and in PDF’s were tested.
The research was conducted by Shaun Wallac, Adobe Research intern and Brown University computer science doctoral candidate and she said, ” This research shows we should start looking at fonts the way we look at reading glasses.” The Lab led UCF’s research used typography to improve reading speed and understand the text. It depends on presentation factors such as font an spacing .
The consortium in conducting various digital readability studies to investigate the effects of how manipulating text characteristics such as font type, size and spacing may boost reading speed and comprehension among adults and children. The efforts contribute to the consortium’s goal to build models and personal tokens that will match reader to the font format that will optimize the overall reading experience by improving reading speed and comprehension.
